The 5 Phases: Water 1
The 5 phases: Water 1. Chinese thought and philosophy are the inspiration of these paintings
Each colour, season, yin and yang organ, planet, sense, emotion, animal etc. is connected with each phase.
I prepared the support of each painting by hand. Several layers of gesso protect the support from different thin layers of high quality oil painting.
In this series of 20 paintings (here a selection of 9 paintings) I tried to make the theory of the Chinese phases visible. Therefore I connected it with occidental thought and used a lot of freedom of associations. In addition the contrast in textures (thin, thick, brilliance, mat) enhances the reading of the works.
The 5 phases; Water 1. Between 1991 and 1995 I made a series about planets. At that time, we didn’t know what Pluto looked like. The planet was known as “invisible”, the mystery of an unknown soldier painted by Rembrandt inspired me: I copied Rembrandt’s soldier’s helm but his face is invisible, hardly recognizable, hidden in the black background. Here I made the same illustration again.
This medium sized square painting is 55 cm high on 55 cm wide will fit in every interieur. You can view each painting alone or in combination with one or more paintings of the same series. More paintings of the same size and theme will give a rythmic and dynamic style in the space.
