Mouvoir: Apparaîtra sur terre…
A selection of 4 oil paintings, illustrations of some sentences of a poem: “Le condamné à mort” (“Sentenced to death”) that Jean Genet wrote in 1942. The writer is a prisoner in a jail in Britain. His neighbour in the next cell is a 20 year old murderer who is condemned to death. Jean Genet expresses in this poem his desire for the young man, and describes the threatening presence of death. This painting is a copy of a miniature of the French artist Jean Fouquet from the Renaissance. Here, I used the rare pigment lapis lazuli blue, like the artists did in that time.
Apparaîtra sur terre un chevalier de fer, “An iron knight will appear on earth.” Would the knight be forecasting death? (Mouvoir? Mourir? To Move? To die?)
This painting has been recently purchased (March 5th 2024)
