No titel- 1987
In 1985-1986, I spent 6 months in Japan and participated in a Butoh dance workshop. Back in the Netherlands, I translated my body experience in paint. This large painting is inspired by a dancer who suggested contrasts between being big and being small.
The work is made of 2 panels of 180 cm X 90 cm. Every rectangular part is as big as a tatami, the traditional Japanese mattress (also used as ground measure). There’s a lot of contrasts between dark and light in this oil painting, the texture is thick. It is one of a series of 4 paintings with the same size and theme.
